The band, which was almost always on tour with the exception of studio recordings, played material from the just-released "Starless and Bible Black" album, older fan favorites as well as newly written and previously unreleased material, and nightly improvisation at a level that many eyewitnesses and reporters described as the "most intense" concerts they had ever experienced. In 1975, a year after the band broke up, a simple live LP called "USA" was released that showed what the wild beast that was King Crimson at its best meant. No other band could combine powerful rock with epic and immensely subtle and powerful improvisations. Many of the shows from the last tour were recorded either professionally on multitrack tape or on stereo tape straight from the mixing desk. These recordings were not made available to fans until 1992, when a selection of highlights was released on the 4CD box set The Great Deceiver. Now the book "The Road to Red" provides a comprehensive overview of this last tour and assesses a band that was at the height of its creative powers. All the recordings have been reissued and are available in their entirety on CD for the first time. Also included are 5 complete concerts recorded using multi-track technology, a restored bootleg of the final New York show, and a new stereo mix of Red, created by Robert Fripp and Steven Wilson in 2012. In total, "The Road to Red" contains 16 concerts on 20 CDs, with the 21st CD being the Red studio album. The box set also includes: A DVD with all Hi-Res mixes of the "USA" album and the new Red stereo mix in Hi-Res. 2 Blu-Ray discs with five complete concerts recorded in multi-track technology (transferred at the highest possible resolution from the original Dolby SR master tapes and in 24/192 DTS-HD Master Sound), the new and original versions of Red, and the existing 5.1. multi-channel mix of the album in 24/96 DTS-HD Sound. Featuring an illustrated, vinyl-album-sized booklet that includes previously unpublished photos and some transcribed lyrics, postcards, copies of handwritten setlists, prints of the "USA" and "RED" album covers, and other memorabilia, this box set is a must-have release for King Crimson fans. For many King Crimson fans, nothing compares to the band's output from 1972-1974. Commenting on the last live concert, Robert Fripp writes in "The Road to Red" that it was the first concert "since Crimson in 1969 that registered 'out of this world' in equal measure at the base of my spine."
