Agharta was recorded one afternoon in 1975 at one of Miles Davis' two concerts in Osaka, Japan. He performed with his septet - flutist and saxophonist Sonny Fortune, bassist Michael Henderson, drummer Al Foster, percussionist James Mtum, guitarist Reggie Lucas and Pete Cosey, who played guitar, synthesizer and percussion. Produced and recorded by Teo Macero, the album's four seemingly unstructured sections emphasize the playing of Davis' backing players rather than his own trumpet. He eschews melody and harmony in favor of a combination of riffs, polyrhythms and funk grooves that the soloists can improvise. The album has been hailed retrospectively as an important and influential jazz-rock record. Cosey's raw music and innovative playing influenced a generation of young musicians, including those on the British jazz scene.
