I bought this LP from a concert in Atlanta in 1960. It amazed me then and it still amazes me today. To me, this IS Ray Charles. In the opening of "Night Time Is The Right Time" Ray says, "...and Miss Marjorie Hendricks will be helping us out with the vocals..." and - heavens! - how she helps! Turn up the volume and lie down. This album is just great. Ray toured with his band in the 1950s and performed at Herndon Stadium in Atlanta. A technician from radio station WAOK recorded it using a single-track tape recorder and a single microphone. This recording was later broadcast. The response from radio listeners was overwhelming and eventually resulted in the release of the Atlanta album. It is one of the most remarkable albums ever made. First of all, it's almost unbelievable when you consider how the record was made. You hear the band perfectly, clearly and balanced, you also hear the screaming, coughing, etc., you feel the exchange between the musicians and the audience and the extraordinary energy of a typical concert where Ray Charles played in front of his own audience. Many of these songs were or have become classics, known by every funk and blues musician in the country and most of the population. Ray Charles was revered like no other musician. This record is the most catastrophic of all Ray Charles records. On two tracks, "The Right Time" and "Tell The Truth" - both featuring Raelettes singer Marjorie Hendricks - the music transcends the rules of art and becomes powerfully shamanic.
