Product information - In the late 1960s, jazz was at a turning point. Soul music had taken away much of the black audience, and the intellectualization of rock was taking away its support among college students. The story usually goes that jazz split into those who went out and those who tried to make people dance. But the story is much more complex than that, and "If You're Not Part Of The Solution" tries to tell that story - It was a period of radicalization in black America: a disproportionate number of young African-Americans were sent to Vietnam, the inner cities of Detroit, Washington, Los Angeles, Newark and others were in flames, and in 1968 Dr. Martin Luther King was shot in Memphis. It was felt that something had to be done, and many political and spiritual centers were created. The jazz musicians who were a central part of that community took their cue from that, and their music reflected it - "If You're Not Part Of The Solution" draws from a melting pot of ideas that can be captured in the "Black Feelings" call of Hammond veteran Johnny Smith or the cosmic wanderings of obscure Philadelphia band Catalyst. Here we find funk in all its forms, whether it's the relentless bass rhythm of the title track or the Miles Davis-influenced shifting groove of Johnny Lytle's "Tawhid". It was an exciting time and the music is captured by it, but above all there is a sense of reverence for greats like Davis and John Coltrane who are pillars of a newly confident African-American culture - In 2019, a jazz revival led by Kamasi Washington in the US and a number of young London groups - Sons Of Kemet, Ezra Collective etc - are mixing different sounds to keep their music relevant to a younger generation. "If You're Not Part Of The Solution" explores where it happened first.
