Melting Pot Venezuela: A soul-jazz compilation with progressive fusion rock of the seventies. In the 1970s, Venezuela became a relatively modern cultural and economic force in South America thanks to its vast oil reserves. This had a profound effect on the local rock scene. While in the 1960s Venezuelan artists were stylistically almost conspicuously imitating their American and British role models, the following decade saw a generation that placed great emphasis on creating a new and, above all, independent sound. Artists such as Vytas Brenner, Engel Rada, Pablo Schneider and Miguel Angel Fuster chose to fuse rock based on traditional Venezuelan music with electronica, funk, jazz and Latin American rhythms. The result was a wild, progressive and experimental mix that not only uniquely combined a multitude of new and old world influences, but also made a significant contribution to cultural identity. We can see parallels with Brazilian tropicalia and the German krautrock scene, which achieved something comparable in the 1970s.
