The Special Consensus

The Special Consensus

Bluegrass Quartet

The Special Consensus is an American bluegrass band that was formed in the Chicago area in 1975 by banjo player Greg Cahill. The band has undergone numerous lineup changes over its long career, with Cahill remaining as the one constant member. The Special Consensus has been known for blending traditional bluegrass sounds with elements of modern acoustic music, often incorporating influences from jazz to country into their work. They have earned critical acclaim within the bluegrass community and have been nominated for several Grammy Awards. Their discography includes a number of albums, with "Scratch Gravel Road" (2012) and "Country Boy: A Bluegrass Tribute to John Denver" (2014) being notable examples. The latter album showcases their ability to pay homage to iconic musicians while still maintaining their unique bluegrass style. In 2020, they released "Chicago Barn Dance," which celebrates the band's roots and the rich history of country and bluegrass music in Chicago. The Special Consensus has also been recognized by the International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA), receiving awards for their contributions to the genre.
