In the United States and Canada, Cleopatra went platinum. The album was well received by music critics. On Metacritic, which assigns a standardized rating out of 100 to reviews by mainstream critics, the album received an average score of 81, indicating "universal acclaim". Stephen Thomas Erlewine of AllMusic called Cleopatra "a richer and more rewarding album than its predecessor, confirming that the Lumineers are more than a one-hit wonder". He added that on the album "the band expands its sound without sacrificing the rustic charm that made it so popular".
