The Essential Van Morrison is a compilation album released in 2015 by Northern Irish singer-songwriter Van Morrison . The album spans Morrison's career from his beginnings with Them to his last studio album, 2014's Duets. The album was met with mostly positive reviews from music critics. On Metacritic, which assigns a standardized rating out of 100 to reviews from mainstream critics, the album received an average score of 78, indicating a "generally favorable rating". Stephen Thomas Erlewine of AllMusic awarded the album four stars out of five, writing that "The Essential Van Morrison is an excellent introduction to the singer's wide-ranging, idiosyncratic career". David Quantick of BBC Music awarded the album five stars and said that "The Essential Van Morrison is an excellent compilation that lives up to what it says on the tin and is the perfect introduction to one of the most important and influential songwriters of the last 50 years." The album was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Soundtrack Compilation for Visual Media at the 58th Annual Grammy Awards.
