Deep respect for music Yngwie Malmsteen's career spans more than 40 years. With his new album "Parabellum" from 2021, the Swedish musician proves that even after such a long time and 21 solo albums, he is still evolving. Malmsteen is undoubtedly one of the best guitarists in the world. In addition, he has repeatedly proven himself to be an excellent songwriter and, especially on his latest albums, has demonstrated a strong vocal presence. One aspect of his approach to a new album has always shone through: an abiding deep respect for the music he plays. Malmsteen has always done his best to bring out all the colors, shades and nuances that are in each of his compositions. This is also true of the work on "Parabellum". He's never been so focused when creating before, "I always try to push myself further with every album I make and try things that are more extreme than before. But this time it helped that I couldn't go on tour because of the pandemic. That meant I could indulge in a lot more time in the studio, both writing and recording. Since I'm usually always on tour, which is great, I haven't had the luxury of spending a lot of time working on new music in over 20 years. But suddenly I didn't have any pressure. I feel like it benefited the album immensely." A lot of time also means trying things out, putting ideas aside or rejecting them, and finally getting the best out of them: "I'm the kind of person who doesn't like to do one take after another on any song. If something doesn't suit me, I move on. But on this album, there were times when I rejected something because I thought I wasn't going to get anywhere. A few days later, I listened to the song again and wondered why I had rejected it in the first place! [...] Things kept changing. Song titles, tempos. Everything was flowing. I listened to a part that I did for a particular song and I realised it would work better if I transferred it to another song," Malmsteen says. In total, ten songs were created this way, four of them with vocals. But even that wasn't pre-planned: 'I like to listen to what I've done in the car. Sometimes I find myself singing something that was supposed to be an instrumental. Then I realize that this song needs vocals. But the opposite also happens." As for the sound of "Parabellum," there are plenty of progressive rock moments this time around. At times Malmsteen seems to be inspired by the late keyboard master Keith Emerson. But that's not unexpected at all, as the musician loves Emerson, Lake & Palmer and has been listening to their albums since he was a teenager. "I'm still a big fan of Keith Emerson. I agree that there are passages on the record where you can definitely hear progressive influences," Malmsteen says. The album title "Parabellum" is Latin and translates to "prepare for war." "There's a track on the album called '(Si Vis Pacem) Parabellum'. Translated it means 'If you want peace, prepare for war'. It was a last-minute decision to name the album that. But I think it fits very well together," Malmsteen explains. The portrait on the cover was painted by artist David Benegas. "Parabellum" is the best example yet of how Malmsteen's creative spark ignited a fierce fire. But despite the care and attention to detail that has been given to every aspect of the album, what makes it truly remarkable is the undoubted joy that emanates from each of the songs. "The bottom line for me is that the passion I feel for the music I make has to be evident." That he's succeeded in doing that is shown early on in "Wolves At My Door," the album's first track, which is a tenth of the overall strong artwork, "I hope people will put this record on and listen to it all the way through. I've noted Parabellum as a unique work of art. Not as a collection of ten songs that you can listen to in any order."
