Ian Gillan Band was a progressive rock band formed by Deep Purple's lead singer Ian Gillan in 1975 after his departure from the famous hard rock band. The Ian Gillan Band marked a departure from the heavy metal sound that had characterized much of Gillan's work with Deep Purple, instead exploring jazz fusion and funk territories. The band released several albums during its existence, including "Child in Time" (1976), "Clear Air Turbulence" (1977), "Scarabus" (1977), and "Live at the Budokan" volumes 1 and 2 which captured their live performances. Although not as commercially successful as Deep Purple, the Ian Gillan Band showcased Gillan's versatility as a vocalist and his willingness to experiment with different musical styles. The band underwent several lineup changes and eventually evolved into simply 'Gillan,' which marked a return to a harder rock sound in the late 1970s and early 1980s.
